WORKSHOP, POLITECNICO DI MILANO

MILAN, ITALY

2018

collaboration with profs. Geir Brendeland, Olav Kristoffersen, and tutor Luca Negrini

The following proposal presented shows the plans for the development of the Vigentino (Milan) area. The urban vision is based on three pillars:

First, urban Milano should be developed and continued from the centre towards the Vigentino in the south. The Scala Romana railyard is freed for development and integrated into the urban fabric. In the Vigentino, around 200-300 000m2 of new programs are introduced and built over time. This include a substantial amount of housing. Hybrid civic programs, research institutions and office space. A new lightweight sustainable architecture develops where transformation and additions mingle with new built projects.

Second, the area is liberated from the more formal constraints of Old Milano and could absorb an incredible variation in both scale and typologies. The development model is based mostly on the public, private partnerships for each of the twenty quarters. “Baugruppen”. Completely private developments and publicly initiated housing schemes. The area can both absorb and encourage diversity. The result is a more informal urbanism, large and small programs combining.

Third, the huge amount of diverse industrial spaces, sheds, garages, towers, and walls are kept, transformed, modified and integrated into a new and unique city fabric. They represent an incredible spatial library. A raw material for a new urbanism that we can not make from new. This transition can happen gradually. If Milano is to remain central as a city devoted to art, design, and fashion it urgently needs spaces like this.

For small workshops, coworking, startup, artists, small companies, film production restaurants or just building custom motorbikes. All programs concerned with the production of beauty are at home here.
